Active Transportation Program Manager

Do you want to join the movement for safer streets for people who walk and ride bikes? Do you want to lead efforts for safe and increased use of active transportation across Maine? A statewide education and advocacy non-profit, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) is dedicated to making Maine a better and safer place to bike, walk, and roll. Working with partners and advocates across the state, we seek to change policy, improve road design, and educate adults and kids on how to share the road and bike and walk safely.    The Bicycle Coalition of Maine is seeking an Active Transportation Program Manager to oversee our advocacy efforts to promote and facilitate the safe and increased use of active transportation (biking, walking, mobility aids, and micromobility) across Maine. The position will provide support and guidance for communities in making safety improvements, such as traffic calming, bike/ped facilities, and road user safety education. This position is also responsible for the BCM’s state legislative agenda and will support communities in crafting and advocating for municipal-level policies and programs.  Candidates will have knowledge of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, laws, and policies; experience mobilizing community members for advocacy causes; strong verbal and written communication skills; and an interest in traveling around the state to connect and inspire action in rural, suburban, and urban communities. Roles and responsibilities

  • Provide insight/commentary on state and regional transportation plans 
  • Serve on relevant state and regional transportation committees, such as Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation Systems Policy Board
  • Oversee and manage advocacy efforts, including community efforts dedicated to promoting the adoption and implementation of proposed policies and infrastructure projects
  • Communicate BCM mission, successes, policy positions as a dynamic public spokesperson through presentations, media outreach, events, and networking
  • Collaborate with elected officials, government agencies, consultants, advocates, and citizens
  • Represent the BCM among environmental, transportation, and health communities

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience in policy, advocacy, and/or transportation infrastructure
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn bicycle and pedestrian and industry issues ranging from safety to infrastructure to law and policy
  • Experience mobilizing community members for advocacy causes
  • Effective oral and written communicator
  • Ability to facilitate meetings of all sizes, ability to manage collaborative processes.
  • Experience as a public speaker, comfort addressing groups or the press. 
  • Strong computer skills and high proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite
  • Passionate about the Coalition’s mission to make Maine better for biking and walking
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, including travel around the state
  • Valid driver’s license

Salary: $50,000-70,000
Job Type: Full-time 
Location: Hybrid/in-person work optional; must be in the Portland office at least once per week
